A Culinary Experience with Jeong Kwan
Step into an extraordinary evening where mindfulness meets culinary mastery for a good cause. World-renowned Buddhist nun Jeong Kwan brings her celebrated temple cuisine to Berkeley for one exceptional night. Featured on Netflix's acclaimed Chef's Table series, Jeong Kwan is recognized globally for elevating vegetarian cooking into a profound culinary and spiritual experience.
This intimate gathering offers a rare opportunity to experience her artistry firsthand—a harmonious blend of ancient wisdom and culinary innovation. Each thoughtfully crafted dish tells a story, connecting guests to centuries of Buddhist culinary tradition.
"If a chef creates food for the body, I create food for the mind. Temple food connects the body and mind ― the physical and spiritual energy. Because it is important for meditation, it shouldn't be an obstacle. So it is important to eat the right food. It has to be from ingredients in season, cooked with simplicity, and with a minimum amount of sauce."
About Jeong Kwan
Although first and foremost a Buddhist nun, not a chef, Jeong Kwan was profiled in Netflix's Chef's Table series (Season Three) and featured in the 2017 Berlin Film Festival documentary series. She is an internationally renowned inspiration to chefs drawn to sustainability and refined plant-based cuisine, having been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Independent, The Sydney Morning Herald, Eater, and Food & Wine, among many other publications.
Jeong Kwan serves as director of Chunjinam Hermitage at the Baekyangsa Temple within the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and as managing director of the International Temple Food Education Center. Her approach to eco-friendly eating practices draws from centuries of Buddhist cultural traditions, handed down through generations and rooted in Buddhist philosophy.
